Title
Ford 1975 Gran Torino, Stirling engine, with JPL & NASA photo archive
Description
"A fascinating archive of original in-house Ford Motor Co. photographs documenting the efforts of the Alternate Engines Research Dept. in cooperation with N.V. Philips of the Netherlands, and JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] to develop the 4-215 Stirling. Ford Motor Co. had contracted with JPL and NASA to conduct an evaluation of the four-cylinder double-acting 170-horsepower Stirling engine--first patented in 1816 as an alternative to the accident-prone steam engines of the early 19th century--to replace the regular internal combustion engines in consumer cars. Two 1975 Ford Torino's were chosen and subsequently heavily modified using a standard California calibrated production model fitted with a 351 gasoline engine as a benchmark."--Zephyr Used & Rare Books.
